Where is the best rainbow trout fishing in the world? Kamchatka? New Zealand? These are common, albeit datable, responses in the fly-fishing community, and rightfully so. Folks in Montana, Chile, and Argentina might be offended if excluded. With no disrespect to other countries or regions, we feel there is a strong case for Alaska. In Alaska, you can swing flesh flies for giants in the fall. Over the summer, there’s topwater mouse excitement that rivals Kamchatka. Outside of those scenarios, there is unbelievable streamer fishing, such as during the smolt migration, and hatches as good as anywhere. If you’ll go with us a bit further on this Alaska train of thought, consider the Arolik River as the crown jewel of the Alaska rainbow treasury.

What Makes The Arolik Special?

1. Distinctive Aging Characteristics:

Arolik River rainbow trout are celebrated for their unique looks, which become even more remarkable with age. As reported by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, these trout often age between 10 to 12 years and showcase a wide variety of appearances, from pronounced kypes and vibrant peach hues to robust shoulders and innumerable spots. The diversity in appearance adds an element of surprise to each catch.

2. They love eating mice:

These trout exhibit an unusual dietary preference for mice, making the use of mouse flies an exceptionally thrilling method of fishing. The river’s grassy banks, frequently lead to mice ending up in the water – a scenario these trout take full advantage of. The spectacle of watching these trout leap from the water for these flies are not to be missed.

3. Unpredictable Behavior:

Catching rainbow trout in the Arolik River is far from straightforward, with their behavior constantly keeping anglers on their toes. Fishing for these rainbows can be challenging for new and experienced anglers alike.

4. Perfect for Two-Handed Fly Fishing:

With its wide-open spaces and suitable flow, the Arolik River is ideal for two-handed fly fishing techniques. Whether you’re employing Spey or Switch rods, the river’s conditions favor a range of strategies. Techniques such as swinging, stripping, and bouncing flies are extremely effective here.

5. Visibility of the Fish:

The transparency of the Arolik River’s waters for much of the fishing season provides an fantastic opportunity for sight fishing. You can easily spot and select your target, observe the fish’s behavior, and watch in real-time as trout approach and take your fly.
