Dry Flies and Freestone Trout in Argentina

Argentina – January

January falls in the middle of the Patagonian summer, when rivers and lakes are at their most productive. Many rivers—like the Chimehuín, Malleo, Limay, and Collón Curá—have strong populations of wild brown and rainbow trout. These fish are often eager to eat, especially during peak terrestrial activity, giving beginners more opportunities to hook up and build confidence.

January is mid-summer in the Southern Hemisphere, so anglers can expect long daylight hours, warm weather, and stable river conditions. This allows for relaxed, all-day fishing without the intensity of cold mornings or unpredictable runoff, which can be off-putting to newcomers. Warm temperatures and stable flows in January mean consistent dry fly action, especially with hoppers, beetles, caddisflies, and mayflies. For a beginner, seeing the fish rise and take a fly on the surface provides immediate feedback and is often easier to manage than subsurface techniques like nymphing or streamer fishing.

Many Argentine rivers are easily wadeable, with clear, gravel-bottomed runs and plenty of room for casting. Compared to tighter, brush-lined rivers in other parts of the world, the open landscapes of Patagonia reduce the frustration of tangled backcasts and tricky positioning—ideal for someone still refining their casting stroke.

Argentina’s established lodge infrastructure, particularly in Patagonia, offers experienced, bilingual guides who are accustomed to working with anglers of all skill levels. Plus, the relatively low fishing pressure on many waters compared to popular U.S. trout streams means less spooky fish and more forgiving learning conditions.

Argentina in January offers high catch rates, approachable conditions, and plenty of visual dry-fly fishing, making it one of the most beginner-friendly international trout destinations for fly anglers.

A Warm Welcome to Saltwater Fly Fishing with Redfish & Gumbo

Louisiana – February

For saltwater fanatics and novices alike, the Gulf coastline is an excellent option during the winter months. There are a range of months that can offer enjoyable fishing; however, we like February for its favorable conditions, particularly compared to other options at this time of the year. We also love Woodland Plantation, located just about an hour south of New Orleans, as a base of operations for targeting Louisiana redfish. The nearby marshlands and coastal waters are home to a robust population of redfish, including opportunities at the famed bulls that are typically weighed, not measured. Compared to the finicky fish of the Caribbean flats like tarpon and permit, redfish are generally cooperative to a decently presented fly (and sometimes even to poorly presented ones). With a good number of opportunities and fly-friendly redfish, Woodland Plantation provides an all-inclusive program with accommodations and food that add quality and comfort to time off the water. All told, this is a strong option for anglers looking to fish skinny water in February, especially those looking for high chances of success and time to hone their skills.

PRO TIP – Spaces fill quickly and far out in advance. If you’re planning a trip for Bull Reds, you’ll want to book around one year in advance in order to secure space and guides. Planning ahead is key in the Bayous of Louisiana.

Springtime Flats Fishing for Permit, Bonefish, and Tarpon in Mexico

Mexico – May

Saltwater flats fishing in Ascension Bay and Chetumal Bay during May is one of the most beginner-friendly ways to get started in saltwater fly fishing, offering the right mix of accessible species, forgiving conditions, and experienced guides. Here’s why these fisheries are particularly good for newer saltwater anglers:

May typically brings stable weather, light winds, and excellent light for spotting fish, all of which are essential for learning to sight-fish. For someone new to the flats, being able to clearly see fish from a skiff or while wading gives them time to practice spotting, leading the fish, and making effective presentations.

Both Ascension Bay and Chetumal Bay are rich ecosystems with large populations of bonefish, permit, and tarpon, as well as secondary targets like snook and jacks. In May, fish are active, visible, and feeding, meaning more opportunities per day to cast at fish—something that’s crucial for beginners still dialing in their presentations.

Both bays feature extensive sheltered flats, creeks, and lagoons that allow for calm-water fishing even when ocean-side conditions are breezy. There’s also a variety of fishing—from poling off a skiff to wading ankle-deep flats, giving beginners a range of comfortable experiences to learn from.

The bonefish in this region tend to be smaller (2–4 lbs) and more forgiving than in places like the Bahamas or Seychelles. They’re perfect for learning—less spooky, more abundant, and still strong enough to pull line and get into the backing. In Chetumal Bay especially, juvenile tarpon (5–30 lbs) are common and can be easier to hook and land than larger migratory fish.

The lodges in this region—such as Grand Slam Lodge, Xflats at Tierra Maya, or Pesca Maya—employ experienced guides who are accustomed to teaching. They’re patient, excellent at putting clients in front of fish, and great at offering practical, in-the-moment coaching to help a new angler succeed.

A Tasting Menu of Tapas, Trout, and Culture in Spain

Spain – June

June in Spain offers some of the most peaceful trout fishing conditions in Europe. The Pyrenees mountains become a stunning backdrop for anglers seeking quiet waters and a diverse fishing experience. Many of the high-country creeks and streams remain an option in September, as well as lowcountry rivers with both rainbows and brown trout. Like in the States, trout tend to seek out food aggressively before the cold of winter, meaning September can be a fantastic mixture of late-season terrestrial and dry fly action, along with effective streamer fishing, depending on the conditions and preferences of the angler. Spain in June provides not only excellent fishing but also a chance to experience the rich history and culture of the region. Spain’s Pyrenees offer an exciting and rewarding experience for a beginner angler.

Endless Opportunities for a Variety of Salmon, Trout, and Char in Alaska

Alaska – July

Conditions change rapidly in Alaska. By mid-July, the world’s largest sockeye salmon runs fill the rivers, providing an incredible introduction to fighting strong, determined fish. These salmon put up an incredible fight, but they follow predictable runs, making them a great species for new anglers to target.

By late July, chum salmon arrive in big numbers. Though often overlooked, chums are aggressive fighters and provide steady action, making them an excellent species for those looking to gain confidence in handling hard-fighting fish.

Trout fishing is also excellent throughout July, with nymphs and streamers being reliable options. Larger trout aggressively take buggers and sculpin patterns, making for engaging battles without requiring overly technical presentations. Dry fly and mouse fishing also stay strong, offering exciting visual takes that’ll keep you excited.

High Summer Cutthroat Trout in the Wilds of British Columbia

British Columbia – August

August offers favorable conditions for fly fishing on British Columbia’s Elk River, particularly for targeting bull trout. Water levels stabilize after the spring runoff, creating clear, manageable flows that make it easier to locate and approach fish. The warmer weather also increases fish activity, especially in the mornings and late afternoons when trout are most likely to feed. Unlike in much of the lower 48, where bull trout are rare and protected, they are abundant here, giving anglers a unique opportunity to target them consistently.

Anglers have success using large streamers in deeper pools and runs, as bull trout are aggressive predators that respond well to baitfish and sculpin patterns. Swinging or stripping weighted streamers works particularly well in August. Nymphing with beadhead stoneflies or Prince Nymphs can also be productive, especially when targeting cutthroat trout in the same waters. Dry fly fishing is possible and ideal for abundant local cutthroat, however, bull trout are primarily taken subsurface.

Getting to Brooks Creek Ranch is straightforward. Travelers can fly into Kalispell, Montana, Calgary, or Cranbrook and then take a scenic drive to the lodge, or Frontiers can arrange a private transfer. The location is remote enough to offer a quiet fishing experience while still being easy to reach. With strong fish populations, predictable conditions, and simple travel logistics, August is a great time to experience this part of British Columbia.
