Castles and wine, fascinating history and beautiful landscapes are some of the first things you think about when you think of traveling to Spain, but when I think of it, I see crystal clear waters teeming with wild trout and delectable Spanish cuisine. For as long as I can remember, I have always dreamt of visiting Spain and in the fall of 2023, I was lucky enough to not only visit Barcelona, but also explore the Pyrenees mountains while fly-fishing with the legendary Cathy and Barry Beck.

Arriving in Barcelona on an early morning flight from Atlanta, my travel companions and I quickly hit the road for the high country! Many of us took advantage of this opportunity to stare out the window soaking up every ounce of the scenery on this 3-hour drive from the Barcelona airport. Once we arrived at our lodge in Aren, we were greeted by the smiling faces of the lodge staff, who were quick to dole out hugs and cheek kisses during our introductions.

After taking some time to unpack and get settled into our rooms, we eventually met back up with the group and lodge staff downstairs for a debrief and to set expectations for the week of fishing and sightseeing ahead. Of course, this debrief involved plenty of wine and laughs. The debrief was followed by a relaxed and delicious 5-course dinner. Each evening the chef would push out a different several course dining experience with fresh and unique culinary creations, our bellies were always overly full & more than satisfied.

Most anglers tend to not think of Spain for its fly-fishing, but now you’re in on the secret, the fishing we experienced was one of the finest and most unique freshwater experiences I’ve ever had. During the days we spent fishing, we journeyed through numerous beautiful alpine streams and rivers situated in the lowlands. The water was a bit chilly, so the trout we targeted primarily tended to be in deeper holes. To get these trout, I had to use a dropper and a dry fly, when those Spanish trout hit, you knew it. These fish were much larger and more aggressive than the brown trout’s I used to catch back home. Spain generally isn’t a destination for big trophies, but those aggressive takes mixed with the picturesque backdrops is enough to leave an impression on anyone.

I am happy to say I enjoyed one fishing day with the company of the Becks, which was memorable to say the least. We enjoyed our leisurely lunch, as I picked their brains on fly-fishing, travel, and how to be a good host. This experience was a special one for me, to ask them any question that popped into my brain, all while absorbing every detail I could from them.

When we weren’t fishing, we focused on exploring the high country. This would include visits to several UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization) sites around the Pyrenes. From touring neighboring valleys and quaint villages, to visiting medieval monasteries, to privately guided winery tours; there was never a dull moment in our adventures. The Pyrenees have played a significant role in the history of Europe as it has acted as a “wall” between France and Spain for centuries. There’s something for everyone here, whether it’s the vineyards where grapes fall right off the vine or the rich cultural experiences that you won’t find elsewhere, its nearly impossible to not be blown away when exploring this countryside.

After a week of fishing and exploring, the time came that we had to make the journey back to Barcelona for our flights home. When you travel to Spain, be sure to spend some time exploring Barcelona. I managed to get the unique experience of touring Barcelona from a sidecar. Once I was on board my flight and settled in my seat for the long journey back to the states, I reflected on the past week. Not only did I check off another box on my bucket list, but I also made a mountain of unforgettable memories with a group of people that I would not otherwise have met, and that I now consider to be friends.
