Planning a fly fishing trip to the Bahamas is as much about logistics as it is about location. With over 700 islands and cays, not all destinations are created equal when it comes to access or matching your objectives. But with help from Frontiers Travel and Bahamas  specialist Joe Linscott, navigating the options becomes straightforward.

Short on Time?

If you’re looking for a quick saltwater escape, especially for folks based near the East Coast of the United States, the Bahamas offers several excellent “long weekend” options. Islands like Grand Bahama and Abaco are especially well-suited for short trips, with direct flights from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and seasonally via Atlanta and Charlotte, and quick access from airport to lodge. In many cases, you can be fishing the same afternoon you arrive and squeezing in a final morning on the flats before heading home. It’s an ideal setup for a 3-4-day getaway where every hour counts.

Looking for a Longer Trip or Traveling with Non-Fishing Companions?

For those planning a longer stay or traveling with a non-fishing companion, the Bahamas offers an ideal balance of adventure and relaxation. Destinations like Kamalame Cay,  the Delphi Club, and Stella Maris Resort pair world-class fishing with boutique accommodations, spa services, beachside lounging, snorkeling, island tours, and fine dining. While anglers enjoy full days on the flats, companions can indulge in laid-back luxury or explore the natural beauty and culture of the islands. A Bahamas fishing trip doesn’t have to be all about fishing – it can be a complete island escape.

Travel Guide to the Logistics of the Bahamas

Here’s an island-by-island breakdown to help you plan smarter and fish more:

Grand Bahama

  • Main Airport: Freeport (direct flights from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, with seasonal flights via Atlanta and Charlotte)
  • Lodges: H2O Bonefishing, North Riding Point Club
  • Why It Works: Short flights, easy transfers, and the potential to fish on both arrival and departure days. Great for short trips or first-timers.

Abaco

  • Main Airport: Marsh Harbour
  • Lodges: Abaco Lodge (10 minutes from airport), Delphi Club (25 minutes)
  • Why It Works: Well-developed, consistent fishing, and good logistics. Afternoon fishing on arrival often possible.

Berry Islands

  • Airport: Great Harbour Cay (direct flights from the US or via Nassau)
  • Lodge: Soul Fly Lodge
  • Why It Works: Remote but accessible; daily flights from Nassau. Makers Air has scheduled service from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to/from the island several times each week. Also served by Ft. Lauderdale private charter.

Andros Island

  • Main Access Points: Fresh Creek (north), Mangrove Cay (central), Congo Town (south)
  • Lodges: Kamalame Cay, Mangrove Cay Club, Andros South, Bairs Lodge, Mars Bay Lodge
  • Travel Notes: Makers Air offers daily direct flights from Fort Lauderdale to both Fresh Creek/Andros Town and Congo Town. Otherwise, connect via Nassau. South Andros flights from Nassau are limited, making Makers Air a great option.

Long Island

  • Airport: Stella Maris
  • Lodge: Stella Maris Resort
  • Why It Works: Stella Maris operates its own planes from Nassau. Commercial flights from Nassau on BahamasAir and Southern Air also available a few times a week.
